LEVO! From the Latin – to rise, lift, elevate. That’s it. The name and the mission statement all in one. 96 POINTS. UNDER $30. Oh baby, this wine SOARS! Quality, value, over-performing scores, and utter delectability – it boggles the mind, truly. But really, it’s what we’ve come to expect from Bret Urness and his Levo project. 

Sine Qua Non, Jonata, L’Aventure – those inky, hedonism-loving, delightfully over-the-top producers that have taken the California wine industry by force over the past few decades – that’s Bret’s model here. This wine falls right in step with such acclaimed powerhouses – concentrated, powerful, purely electric syrah. But…not $90, and certainly not $500…this is that cult-y style, at a supremely tantalizing price…at least for now! This is like Cote Rotie on steroids – meaty, inky, roasted herb, dark blue and black fruit, pepper spice, over-the-top hedonism, and sheer delight – and yet, for all that, remarkably, impossibly, well-balanced with bright acidity, tremendous tension, and an impeccably smooth and velvety finish. This is one of Cali-Rhone’s most delicious and delightful surprises… and the much-maligned syrah grape could ask for no worthier champion. Give this a shot. Get more than you think. 96 POINTS for heaven’s sake! Under $30!!! Drink now AND over the next decade!
