Ty Caton Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaker's Cuvee Estate Moon Mountain District 2017
“Guess what! I got a fever….and the only prescription…is more Cabernet!" – not Bruce Dickinson
But seriously. $18?!! That should cure any ailment…but FLY, ZING, skip and seesaw your way to the app or whatever ASA-dang-P because…well, you know…! Cabernet like this, from the now much-coveted Moon Mountain appellation priced anything close to what we’re doing today is as rare as…a blue moon? A harvest moon? A blood moon?
OK. Loaded up? Sweet, good on ya.
WHAT a rip-roaring deal. Bright red currants all day long, plummy, juicy goodness and pretty lavishly spicy/oaky, man we love the word LAVISH, oh lavish me with under-$20 cabernet, pleeeease…ah, sorry, packed with what I might call “grilled vanilla bean”, cedar, ripe as sunshine berries, toffee, a hint of mint and a muscley frame of mountain tannins that feels more like Mt. Veeder than Moon Mountain. This is a blend of 76% cabernet sauvignon, 13% syrah, 7% petite sirah, 4% merlot (whoa!), aged in 60% new French oak…and, um…$18. ** poof **
Ty Caton has been in the wine/vineyard biz most of his life (me too, come to think of it) and has some amazing vineyards to source from, including this coveted little patch of Moon Mountain (interesting history here) and, oh, is it already GONE? Grab it while we have it!!
Ty Caton created his Cabernet Collection to highlight the very best blocks within his Estate Vineyard on Moon Mountain. Ty’s Estate Knoll Cabernet is from a tiny half-acre block, which took over 80 jackhammer bits to plant the 559 vines. The resulting wine has penetrating dark fruits, remarkable depth, and character.
Moon Mountain AVA Cabernets can combine the robust, hedonistic qualities found on Mount Veeder with the elegance and savory characteristics common on Spring Mountain. Ty’s 70 case production Estate Knoll Cabernet is a stunning example of just how great they can be.
Notes of oak, vanilla, tobacco, blackberry, and black cherry. Hints of leather and smoke as well.

About The Producer
Ty Caton returned to his hometown of Sonoma in 1997 determined to turn his family's 108-acre ranch, located in the prestigious Moon Mountain District AVA, into a prime vineyard. Today, 40 of the 108 acres are planted to wine grapes, and they produce about 10,000 cases of critically acclaimed wine per year. These special wines truly express the quality of the fruit grown on their land high in the Mayacamas Mountains.
